Hope against hate: how journalists and citizens can reclaim democracy

Live roundtable recording with George Monbiot, Yasmin Alibhai-Brown and Nafeez Ahmed

In November 2025, Bylines Network organised a special roundtable event discussing the rise of extremism and hate and exploring what citizens and journalists could do in response.

Our world feels increasingly polarised. Far-right populism, authoritarianism, and extremism are on the rise. But there is power in hope and unity. Across communities, citizens and journalists are standing up for truth, accountability, and democracy.

This is an honest, lively, inspiring discussion reflecting on ways citizen action, fact-based journalism, and civic engagement can hold back authoritarianism and build a better, more hopeful future.
